Short Squeeze

EliteMost-shorted names by short interest & days-to-cover

Short interest and float come straight from Yahoo Finance's reported figures, which lag the bi-monthly exchange short-interest settlement (the run date marks the snapshot). High short interest is a setup, not a signal. A squeeze needs a catalyst to ignite, and crowded shorts can stay crowded for a long time. Days to cover is short interest divided by average daily volume. Not investment advice.

How it works

Less a model than a measurement. Short interest as a share of the float tells you how much of a company's tradeable stock has been borrowed and sold. Days-to-cover tells you how long those positions would take to buy back at normal volume.

High on both is the condition a squeeze needs. It is not a prediction that one happens. Most heavily shorted stocks simply stay heavily shorted.

short % of float = shares short ÷ float · days to cover = shares short ÷ average daily volume

When it misleads

The data is stale by construction. Exchanges publish short interest twice a month, so what you are reading can be two weeks behind the tape.

Crowded shorts are usually crowded for a reason. This list holds the next squeeze and a great many companies the market is correctly betting against, and it cannot separate them.
